National Children's Dental Health Month Is Here

Children's Dental Health Month is a suitable time to focus on children's oral health. The American Dental Association (ADA) has designated February as the national children's dental health month. They aim to spread awareness about the proper oral health techniques to help parents, caretakers, and other influential people in children's lives. The dental association creates campaigns on various oral health issues that affect a child's dental health every year. The ADA and the dental providers are aware that teaching young children some simple steps to dental health will lead to excellent life-long oral healthcare.

Importance of Dental Health in Children

Tooth decay is preventable and has been identified as one of the most chronic childhood diseases. If tooth decay is not cured promptly, it may cause discomfort for children, affecting their ability to eat and speak and leading to future complex oral health problems. Poor oral health has also impacted children's ability to focus in school, contributing to more absences and lower grades.

Good oral habits are necessary for preventing tooth decay. Besides brushing and flossing of teeth, we recommend all parents take their children for a dental examination by the age of one. It will allow the parent and child to establish a comfortable relationship with a dentist.

How Can You Help With Your Child's Oral Health?

National Children's Dental Health Month provides an ideal time to improve your child's oral health habits. Some helpful tips to keep your child's teeth strong and healthy:

First Dental Visit

Primary teeth are critical for a child's overall oral health. Ideally, children should be taken to a dentist when their first tooth comes in or around their first birthday.

Preventive Care

Early childhood tooth decay is a chronic childhood disease. This condition can severely impact overall oral health and disrupt the development of adult teeth. Keep your child's teeth healthy by scheduling regular dental exams twice a year. Your child's teeth will be cleaned and evaluated during the exams to ensure your little one's mouth is healthy and robust. It is vital to diagnose and address problems early.

New Toothbrush

It is suggested that you buy a new toothbrush every three months. There can be no better time to get a new toothbrush for your child than National Children's Dental Health Month. The bristles of a toothbrush tend to get frayed with usage, so keep changing your child's brush very often.

Treat Tooth Decay

Sugary snacks and chocolates can increase the risk of cavities. Protect your child's teeth with sealant and fluoride applications to ward off tooth decay.
